We lost a just fight to increase equality of employment opportunity for our kids today by 43-55-2 in Senate vote #243 as every Republican and Sen. King [I-ME] rejected the outstanding Sanders Amendment S.Amdt. 2177 To provide for youth jobs, and for other purposes to be part of S. 1177 to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (for years dubbed "No Child Left Behind Act") now to be cited as the “Every Child Achieves Act of 2015”.... [yeah, right] fer sure.
Mr. Sanders [I-VT] introduced (see AMENDMENT NO. 2177 on pages of July 8, 2015 CONGRESSIONAL RECORD — SENATE S4887--S4894) what every Senator had many days to read, research, discuss and debate, his proposal to insert at the end of title X the following:
PART C—EMPLOYING YOUNG AMERICANS; Subpart 1—Youth Jobs to be cited as the ‘‘Employ Young Americans Now Act’’... (continues).Sanders tried to get us to have a national conversation on not only these topics: not only the needs of our young people, not only a dysfunctional child care system that we talk about and the need to make sure working families all over this country have good-quality, affordable childcare; not simply that college is increasingly un-affordable for millions of working-class families; and not only that the U.S., tragically embarrasses itself by having by far the highest rate of childhood poverty of any major industrialized country on Earth. In his Senate floor speech yesterday Sanders witnessed to us that we have significantly ignored the needs of our children, and that is not what a great nation does—not a nation that looks forward to the future.
