Received this e-mail today from former Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto’s (D. NV) U.S. Senate campaign:
Catherine Cortez Masto (D. NV)
If there’s one thing we as a society should do everything to protect, it’s the safety of our children.
But the notorious website Backpage – a platform used to advertise child sex trafficking – is refusing to cooperate to end the sex trafficking of minors. We cannot let this stand.
As attorney general, I saw firsthand the toll human trafficking takes on our communities. On average, 50 percent of juvenile sex trafficking victims police made contact with in Las Vegas were from Nevada. These are our kids – our daughters and sons. We must do whatever we can to put an end to this vile crime – including holding companies like Backpage accountable.
That's why I'm calling on the Senate to do right by the victims and demand Backpage's cooperation. But in order to make this happen, I need you standing with me.
If Backpage is not doing everything in its power to put an end to child sex trafficking, we must do everything in our power to ensure the company is brought to justice.
Knowing the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children says 71 percent of the child trafficking reports it receives involve ads posted on Backpage – the site ought to cooperate with any effort to end child sex trafficking.
We cannot sit idly by while our kids are being trafficked in our own backyard. We must do the right thing and give a voice to those most precious to us: our children.
Thank you for joining me in this important effort,
